The Holy Family Shrine was dedicated on Sunday, May 18 presided by Archbishop Dolan after the 9:00 AM Mass along with a May Crowning Prayer Service and Reception.

The development of the cast bronze Holy Family statue for the Prayer Gardens began nearly three years ago with a sketch.  After the sketch was approved, the statue had humble beginnings as a wire frame, which was covered and modeled in clay.  Several adjustments were made as the piece took shape, to evoke the desired depiction of Our Holy Family, the model for today's contemporary family of faith.

Five parishioner families have made this shrine possible:

  • The Dan and Carol Geenen Family, in honor of their parents, Joseph and Nancy Geenen and Raymond and Mary Bula
  • Marianne Kuhlow, in memory of her parents, Anne and Benjamin, her brother Robert and in her name.
  • Sarah Nastoff, in memory of her husband, Al, and their sons, Alexander and Christopher Nastoff.
  • In memory of John and Helen Redelman.
  • Arthur and Ardis Vlasak, in memory of their sons, Arthur J. Vlasak, Jr., and Joseph J. Vlasak, II.

The crown of flowers has been donated by Dick and Nancy Reinhart.

The development of the cast bronze Crucifix for the Prayer Gardens began nearly three years ago with a sketch.  The cross was inspired by the geometric lines of the architecture of the church and bell tower.  After the sketch was approved, the crucifix was modeled in clay.  Several adjustments were made to evoke the desired depiction of Our Lord.

We are very thankful for the generous gift of Marge Healy, who sponsored our new Crucifix, in memory of her special daughter, Mary.

May God continue to bless this unfolding gift to present and future parishioners as this area of our parish grounds is being transformed into a sacred space, holy ground!

Prior to its arrival at St. Dominic, the crucifix is protected in a shipping crate.

Development of the St. Dominic Bronze Statue

In this cast bronze statue of our patron, St. Dominic, founder of the Dominican order, the saint is depicted with his traditional symbols.  The dog carries a burning torch to set the world (represented by the orb at his feet) aflame with the Gospel, which he holds in his left hand.  The star at his forehead recalls a vision associated with his baptism, and the beads reflect his devotion for the rosary.

We are very appreciative of the gift of Bob and Marge Sherman who have sponsored our new St. Dominic statue.

May God bless this special space on our parish grounds.

Additional Planned Statue for the Prayer Gardens

We have one remaining shrine that will be added to the prayer gardens sometime in the future, the Pieta; Mary with the crucified body of her son, Jesus, in her lap.  We have received two donations for the Pieta shrine.

With the increase in bronze cost, the remaining shrine will necessitate a total donation of $50,000 or more to become a reality in the prayer gardens. If you would be in a position and are interested in providing a $10,000 donation toward the cost or more, please contact Karen Chaffee or me.
