To seek Christ, Know Christ and Become Christ, each one for the sake of all

  Sandwich Ministry

Two dedicated groups of women sandwich time into their busy schedules to meet once per month to make upwards of 300 sandwiches for the Guest House in Milwaukee. Starting in 1992, the Schoenstatt Ladies of St. Dominic stepped forward to help Human Concerns support the Guest House – a men’s shelter on N. 13th St. in Milwaukee. Marilyn Sladky explained why their group participates, “While everyone in our group are parish members and we feel this outreach is important to the homeless, it is also a way for us to practice our Schoenstatt Catholic Spirituality.”

In addition to the sandwiches that are made and delivered for the clients, who go out to work everyday, donations of clothing, personal supplies, sweets, blankets are also collected. Gerri Schultz has been involved in the Sandwich Ministry for 12 years with a second group of women. Making ham and cheese sandwiches in the Marcy Center, with this smaller group has created a strong connection between the women. Gerri offered her reasons for staying involved with this service, “Because it is working to provide solutions to Milwaukee’s homelessness and moving clients towards independence, by providing tangible support, we are helping to restore dignity, allowing people a chance to get back on their feet.”

All the women involved in the Sandwich Ministry, ask you to please pray for all the people they support in this mission. If you would like to get involved, please bring men’s clothing, blankets and other items to the Marcy Center Kitchen on the 2nd Monday of the month from 8:00-9:00 a.m. or the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 10:00-11:00 a.m. They will make sure the items reach the men of the Guest House. Items needed for the clients are also listed on the Guest House website.

The majority of guests come to the Guest House with three goals: obtaining housing, securing income, and committing to healthy living. They learn to undertake change, reclaim their power, and ignite their personal motivation to live constructively and productively.
