All children are learners,
sometimes excelling, sometimes struggling. They will learn no matter
what we as teachers do. If they are uninspired, unchallenged and
ignored, they will learn indifference, apathy and develop a boredom
tolerance. If children are encouraged and stimulated, they will learn
confidence, how to think, a love of learning and knowledge. Children are
natural learners, as teachers we are responsible for what they will
learn.
Formal education should provide the knowledge and structure necessary
for achievement; the discipline required for productivity, and resources
to explore beyond what is required. Formal education must provide a
sound foundation for our children to start from, providing the basic
skills necessary to function independently in our present society.
Discipline is essential to productivity; whether proofing a 400 page
legal document, plowing through a 30-step calculus problem or standing
in line to go to the lunchroom. Lastly, the purpose of education is to
create an eagerness for more, to create thinkers and inspire the
curiosity of more knowledge. |
